Free vs Pro in a private finance app: what actually changes
Pricing pages often hide the real question: what do you lose if you stay free? In a private finance app the answer should be honest and short. The ledger that holds your life should not sit behind a paywall. The tools that help you plan ahead can.
Here is how Vittora draws that line.
What Free always includes
The core product is free forever. That is not a trial with a timer; it is the private ledger you use every day.
On Free you get:
- A private, offline-first ledger with no bank login
- Optional sync through your personal iCloud account
- Expenses, income, and transfers
- Categories, payees, and accounts you control
- CSV import and export whenever you want
- Budgets and savings goals
- Recurring transactions and subscription tracking
- Splits and a debt ledger for shared costs and IOUs
- Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets, Watch complications, and Shortcuts
- Year in Review, cash flow, and net worth over time
- Household budgets shared through the members’ iCloud, separate from each person’s ledger
- Apple Watch quick entry and voice entry, and a widget that can log a preset expense without opening the app
None of that requires Pro. You can capture, categorize, budget, export, and keep devices in sync without unlocking anything.
What Pro adds
Pro is for people who want planning depth on top of the same private ledger.
Tax estimates for five countries, educational only. The profile stays free, including U.S. contribution headroom for 401(k), IRA, and HSA room. Pro calculates the estimate, the regime comparison, and the tax report export for India, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada. India still includes old and new regime views, and 80C and 80D-style amounts where the old regime applies. This is educational tooling inside your own data. It is not tax advice, not a filing product, and not a substitute for a qualified professional. Rules change; your situation is yours.
Forward-looking reports. Beyond looking back at what you spent, Pro includes cash-flow forecast, subscription audit, 50/30/20, the emergency fund tracker, a financial health score, spending outlook with a what-if you set yourself, and custom reports. The score describes your records for the month. It is not advice, and it does not compare you with anyone else.
Unlimited receipt OCR. Free includes a modest OCR allowance (five scans per month) so you can try receipt capture. Pro removes that monthly cap so heavy receipt users are not rationing scans.
Everything Pro unlocks still lives on your devices, with the same optional private iCloud sync and the same “Data Not Collected” App Store privacy label. Paying does not move your ledger onto a Vittora server.
What we do not sell as Pro
Clarity also means saying what is not on the roadmap as a paid upsell in this story:
- No bank aggregation or automatic bank feeds
- No merge of two people’s personal ledgers. Household sharing covers household budgets and the expenses logged against them, through iCloud, and it is free
- No “AI will manage your money” promise. Suggestions stay on the device and only suggest Those are different products with different privacy surfaces. Vittora’s Pro tier deepens planning on a personal ledger; it does not turn Free into a demo of a cloud finance suite.
How to decide
Stay on Free if you want a private place to log spending, split costs, hit budgets, and export CSV across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Watch without a bank password.
Upgrade to Pro if you want the tax estimate for any of the five countries, the forward-looking reports, and uncapped receipt OCR on the same private foundation.
Either way, the source of truth stays yours. Read more in Security or Pricing when you want the current Free vs Pro matrix in one place.
